Big News!! | Kay and George | Arkansas Couple Photographer

I've got some big news in this blog, so stick with me!

This session really hits home with me. I'll be honest, I was nervous about it because I'd never really photographed any couples older than 30 besides my parents. I wasn't sure what prompts I should use and how comfortable they'd be in front of the camera. I tried to look up some inspiration, but it was surprising how few sessions there are with older couples compared to the millions of engagement sessions on Pinterest.

I worried for nothing because my grandparents knocked it out of the park. I was right to think it was different than my normal sessions, but not because it was awkward or hard. They've been together for 48 years, so they're truly one person. The way they interacted with each other was so effortless.

A little background:

My grandpa has severe dementia. He doesn't remember his grandchildren and doesn't always remember his kids either. He'll ask you who you are, what you do, where you live, etc. every five minutes. But it's incredible...he still remembers my grandma 9 times out of 10. And during this session while we were talking about their life together, I saw in his eyes more life than I've seen in years. Remembering the times they've had together brought out humor and flirty playfulness, which I've never really seen from my grandpa before. I've thought about this for a few weeks now and it's still mind blowing to me. It makes their love so much more special to me.

Maybe it's because I'm married and I imagine how Nathan and I will interact in 45 years. Or maybe it's because of how patient and loving my grandma is to my grandpa despite their circumstances. All I know is that photographing people that have been through everything together sets my soul on fire.

Any time I've talked about this session with friends and family, I've gotten goosebumps. One of my friends said she could see a spark in my eye. Really, this is the first time I've been truly passionate about something with photography. I really do love photographing couples and weddings, families, seniors, boudoir, everything. But none of it sets my soul on fire like this.
